Empty Your Wallet for a Good Cause

October 26, 2009

In these challenging economic times you may think that carrying around a fat wallet would be a good thing.   Not so fast, at least in the literal sense.   Fans of the Seinfeld show may remember an episode where George carries around an overstuffed wallet that finally “explodes” in the middle of the street when he attempts to cram in on more sliver of paper.  No doubt if you’ve watched the episode it was good for a laugh, I mean “it’s funny because it’s true” and if you can’t laugh at yourself who can you laugh at?

Having lived through back pain for most of my adult life which included episodes of physical therapy and surgery, I realized I was going to have to make a few changes.   That fat wallet in the back pocket of your pants can offset the alignment of your spine ever so slightly (in George’s Costanza’s case significantly) and cause back pain.   Technical terms may include Piriformis Syndrome or “Wallet” Sciatica.

Well I took a look at what I was carrying around in my wallet at the time.  The abridged lists includes:  multiple credit cards, my UF Student ID card (I had graduated six years earlier), a Bonus Card from Every Grocery Store and Drug Store in the neighborhood, my Subway Club Card, my voter registration card & most importantly my membership card for the Punxsutawney Phil Fan Club.  After conducting a scientific poll with a sample of one (me) I decided to make the monumental move to the front pocket wallet.

I took out most of the nonsense I was carrying around and consolidated to my driver’s license, a business credit card, a personal credit card, my ATM card, a few business cards & cash.   Notice cash was absent from the description of my old wallet as I was broke, now I carry around literally ten’s of dollars with my new simplified front pocket wallet.

So did this “bold” change cure my back pain?   Who knows, but did I need to be carrying all that c#*p in my wallet in the first place?   At worst, I didn’t make my back pain worse.   So why not start shopping for a front pocket wallet?  If you’re not ready to make the leap to the front pocket wallet, try taking your wallet out of your pocket instead of sitting on it all day.   Either way your back will thank you.
